New Washington Medical Group is a Training Practice

We are proud to announce that we have been approved to train fully qualified doctors who wish to specialise in general practice.  We also offer training to medical students from time to time.

Our Trainees (ST1 ST2s or ST3s) are fully qualified doctors, who have chosen General Practice as their career, and who, since gaining their degree in Medicine, will already have had experience working as doctors in various hospital specialties. They are usually attached to the surgery for 4-12 months.

Our current ST1’s are :
Dr Rowena Donnisonwho will be with us until August 2025

ST1’s can provide the same care as that given by the other doctors within the practice, but also have close clinical supervision by Trainers at the practice and will refer to them where necessary.

As part of their assessment in training, GP Trainees have to sometimes video-record consultations. These recordings are strictly confidential and only seen by doctors involved in their assessment. Video recording of consultations is only ever done with your express written consent, and you may choose to withhold such consent without giving any reason or affecting your care in any way.

You may receive a text message at 6pm on 30.09.24 to inform you of changes to the Sunderland GP Enhanced Access Service.

The Enhanced Access Service is a GP appointment service run by local healthcare staff which runs Monday to Friday 6.30pm to 8.30pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm. The service is available to all patients registered with a Washington GP Practice and can be ideal for those who cannot attend their GP Practice during normal practice hours.

The service currently runs Monday to Saturday from Washington Primary Care Centre but from 1st October 2024 the Enhanced Access Service will be held from Galleries Medical Practice (Galleries Health Centre) on Tuesday evenings 6.30pm to 8.30pm and Saturdays 9am – 5pm.

This will run alongside the current service which is located at Washington Primary Care Centre which will continue to run on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

You may be offered an appointment at either location if appropriate.

There will be no change to the clinical services on offer.

Local and NHS services

The surgery works in partnership with local and NHS service providers and groups.

If you can’t get an appointment with your GP or can’t get there during the day due to work or other commitments you can use the Enhanced Access Service.

Sunderland offers extra appointments seven days a week at your local out of hours site, alternatively it may be possible to arrange an appointment at another site across the city which your practice will arrange.
